Welcome to the Ioway Wiki!

"Wilderness Ioway:

A Sustaining Adventure and Writing Experience ”

From September 24  to 28, 2007 Professor Ken Daley will take 9 youth ages 13-17 on a wilderness experience that teaches and demonstrates a sustainable adventure. They will move under their own power through the back roads and wilderness remnants of Iowa. They will be self-sufficient at all times as they bike south from Fairfield to the Des Moines River. They will then wilderness camp as they sea-kayak down the Des Moines River to the Mississippi River. During the trip Ken will teach them about back-country living, sustainability, and the practice of wildness. The participants will chronicle their journey in a personal journal that will serve as the basis for a post trip essay. This reflective essay will explore wildness and their personal relationship with it.

This program is sponsored by Big Green Summer (a program of the Sustainable Living Coalition). Roger Gipple of Adair County, Iowa is the major benefactor of this project. He has a deep and abiding passion for creating wild places where nature can ply her magic unencumbered by human interaction.

Before leaving they will plant trees to sequester carbon to offset / minimize their impact on the environment. Participants will make enough biodiesel to transport their kayaks to the river and return the bikes and BOB (Beast Of Burden) trailers to home base. They will use the biodiesel conversation facility of the Maharishi University of Management's Sustainable Living Degree Program. A short video on the process can be viewed at http://www.mum.edu/sustainable_living/ The video link can be found in the bottom left corner of the center picture after it stops the slide show. They are doing the demo on the same equipment the participants will use.

The following photos show the actual equipment they will use as they bike and kayak their way through the adventure.
